Chapter 13

Andy

“Welcome to Malum,” I said politely, doing the traditional Malum greeting. It was a strange ritual that involved loud clapping and excessive bowing, and I couldn’t help but think it would have been nicer if my brother, Ryssi, and his bride, Paige, had been around.

The two of them were busy ruling Gideon. I’d sent Ryssi a message and let him know about the upcoming nuptials, and he’d freaked out a bit, as was to be expected, but he’d also wished me luck.

Even though my brother and I hadn’t been close for a good long time, it still felt nice to know that he was happy for me.

“Thank you,” the woman in front of me said. Her skin was deep blue and her hair hung long and loose. It was a lighter blue with streaks of pink. She had a lovely smile and a big grin. She was with two guards who had accompanied her from Sapphira.

“How was your journey?” I asked.

“Completely worth it.”

Her answer was polite and succinct, and she let me know that she appreciated her journey here.

“Thank you,” I said. “Is this your first visit to Malum?”

“Yes, it is, but hopefully, it won’t be the last.”

She grinned, and I nodded, but didn’t say anything for a moment. I knew she was coming onto me. That was what this entire event was for, after all. It was for visiting aliens to find out whether they wanted to try to marry me, and whether I wanted to try to marry them.

There were going to be dozens of women flying to the planet, and probably a few men, who would all want to marry me.

The problem was that none of them were going to be Lane.

Shit.

I was in so much damn trouble. I should have proposed to her a million years ago, yet I hadn’t. I’d been scared, and we’d been young, and it had just never been the right time.

And now...

Well, now it was too late for that, wasn’t it?

Once again, I didn’t feel like it would be fair to ask Lane to settle for me. I didn’t feel like it would be okay to ask her to choose me. Not after everything she’d gone through.

She was the most lovely and kind creature I’d ever laid eyes on, but...

“Your Majesty?”

I was jolted back to reality when I saw a look of concern on the woman in front of me. She was staring at me like I was going crazy, and perhaps I was. Maybe I was.

“I’m sorry,” I told her. “Enjoy your visit.”

I hurried to the next group of people who had debarked their ship. This was a group of human girls who had come from Mars. They had many different types of hair: one had green and two had pink. A few of them had brown hair and one girl had the loveliest red hair I’d ever seen in my life.

One of the tallest human girls took a step forward and curtseyed.

“Your Highness,” she said.

“Uh, thank you,” I nodded curtly to her.
